Welcome to the OB Nurse Academy New Grad Mentorship!

The program was born after twenty years of working in maternal child health and repeatedly recognizing that additional support is needed for new nurses entering this specialty.  The OB nurse academy mentors have twenty years of experience in high risk antepartum, OB triage, labor and delivery, circulating during c-sections/tubal ligations, postpartum care and well baby newborn nursery.  Your mentors are collectively board certified in inpatient obstetrics and are trained instructors in fetal Monitoring, NRP, and BLS.  

We are here to help ease the transition into your exciting new speciality! We want you to have the KNOWLEDGE, CONFIDENCE and COMMUNICATION skills that will help you be the best maternal child nurse you can be! We are here to guide you and support you during the journey and want you to be empowered and successful!  You are right where you need to be and we are so glad to have you with us!

What is it?

The OB Nurse Academy Mentorship program is a 90 day program that includes weekly meetings, customized mentorship and accountability coaching that is conducted via zoom.

You will have access to content not shared anywhere else, have personalized face to face time with your mentor as well as access to your mentor via email should situations arise outside of your scheduled meetings.  

Who is it for?

New graduate nurses who are hired into labor and delivery and are currently on orientation or soon to begin orientation.

What is the Process?

Module 1

In this module you will meet your labor patient and get to know her. We will discuss and role play pertinent aspects of giving/receiving report and highlight what information you need to gather from the prenatal record.  By the end of this module you will be introduced to the basics of fetal monitoring and register for a course. You will also have an understanding and appreciation for neonatal resuscitation as well as be registered for your first NRP course. Lastly, you will have the knowledge and be able to discuss labor support and management.

Module 2

Now that your patient is laboring and you can read her strip and report her progress/interventions to your preceptor and the patient’s provider you will now be introduced to the different complications of pregnancy as well as how to manage OB emergencies.  You will learn warning signs as well as interventions for things such as shoulder dystocia, high epidurals, prolapsed cord and more. We will also discuss pain management in detail and you’ll know what you need before during and after your patient receives an epidural.  The role of the circulator will also be discussed in both planned and emergent cesarean sections.

Module 3

In this module we will discuss the role of the nurse during the birth, utilizing your NRP skills, newborn assessment, how to facilitate the magic hour as well as breastfeeding basics and how to support your new mom before she is transferred to post-partum.  You will also learn recovery assessments and how to manage postpartum hemorrhage. We will also discuss how to support a family during perinatal loss.

Throughout your mentorship we will constantly be evaluating your progress and identifying areas where you feel you need extra support.
